Claudia is a single-mom of two who needed an escape from the ever-increasing rental market. We connected through HomeSight–a South Seattle-based organization dedicated to preserving and promoting economically and culturally-diverse communities through affordable homeownership, business development, and community advocacy.

Once we started talking, and Claudia realized that home prices were also high, she became concerned about the need to go further south to find something that fit her budget, which would increase her commute to her Columbia City job and cut into the time that she would be able to spend with her children.

Are you wondering what do with all the stuff you’ve piled up while spring cleaning? Not to worry, we can help!

Next month, my office, Windermere Mount Baker Real Estate will host our annual 7th annual Free Recycling & Paper Shredding Event at Rainier Community Center (4600 38th Ave. S.).

Bring your old laptops, BBQs, phones, cameras, and TVs. Empty out your old paper files and bring them to our big shredding truck for immediate destruction.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, from 10 am to 2 pm.

Intro to Self Defense for teens and adult women who want to take charge of defending themselves. Develop the attitude and learn techniques to prevent and fend off attack. All levels of ability and fitness are welcome.

SELLER SUCCESS STORY: Joelle’s Big Adventure

Joelle’s charming 1909 Seward Park Craftsman sold for $16,000 above asking price.

Joelle owned two Seattle homes: one in the Central District that she lived in and one in Seward Park that she rented out.

I first met with her because she intended to list the former in order to achieve some financial freedom and be able to travel, but she wasn’t quite ready to take off yet, so figured that once she sold the Central District home she occupied, she’d rent something in the area to live in until she was ready to go.

However, I advised that she reconsider that strategy after reviewing rental prices in her Central area neighborhood, and cautioned that—with rising prices—once she sold her home, she would not likely be able to purchase another one there.

Neighborhood Spotlight: Skyway Library

Skyway Library is open Monday-Thursday 10 am-9 pm; Friday 10 am-6 pm; & Saturday 10 am-5 pm.

Opened on January 26, 2016, the Skyway Library is an 8,000-square feet neighborhood jewel designed by Weinstein A/U. The big blue building features computers, printers & Wi-Fi, meeting room, photocopier/scanner and after-hours book return.

“We’re so lucky to have a place like Skyway Library in our neighborhood!” says one Facebook review. “This place is truly our community hub – whether you’re in a club, a child building healthy social relationships and learning about bugs, a teen interested in immersing themselves in activities they actually care about (like a “Hunger Games” obstacle course) or an adult interested in documentary films and live music… or, you just want a great book.”

Spring is coming.

Hang in there, friends! It won’t be long before this bitter cold is a distant memory, and—if you’re lucky—you’ll be spending way too much time in the garden. This month, I’m pulling winter weeds to prevent them from seeding. It helps to keep spring and summer weeding at a minimum.

Neighborhood Spotlight: Skyway Library

In other news, have you seen the extensive list of upcoming events at Skyway Library? I was thrilled to discover everything from Slanted Eyes: The Asian American Experience to Lego Brick Builders and everything in between, and am really looking forward to the Indoor Cinema showing of Loving—the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, a couple whose arrest for interracial marriage in 1960s Virginia began a legal battle that ended with the Supreme Court’s historic 1967 decision.
