RESTAURANT REVIEW: Columbia City Ale House

We have been going to Columbia City Ale House almost every Friday since they opened more than 20 years ago. It’s our “Cheers,” where all the servers know our name, we know theirs, and our drinks show up shortly after we arrive without a word.

We started the tradition because we like to eat out on Friday nights after a long work week. Before we made CCAH a tradition, we would ask one another every Friday, “Where do you want to eat?” Then it was the back and forth trying to decide.

We finally chose the Ale House as our permanent go-to spot because they have rotating specials that we usually choose, and if we aren’t into the specials, they have some menu staples that we love. They also have rotating beers, ciders and wine.

The food is always delicious and the drinks always cold. CCAH is our home for comfort food. The famous chicken sandwich is my favorite non-special staple. It’s a lightly breaded boneless breast of chicken seared in garlic oil, then topped with Mozzarella cheese and baked in the oven. Served on toasted Rye bread with cream cheese, sliced tomatoes, red onions, mayonnaise, and lettuce. It is absolutely the best chicken sandwich anywhere!

The tuna melt and Rueben are also amazing. Also, the atmosphere is cozy and inviting, and it’s usually quiet enough to carry on a conversation. CCAH is currently only doing take-out after being closed for several months due to COVID.

I recently saw on Facebook where they were closing for good, and we were devastated. A couple of weeks ago, we got word that Emily (one of the servers) is buying the place and is currently doing take out. We are very excited for her! The menu is limited, and they don’t have the specials yet, but we are looking forward to the time that we can eat in again.

CCAH is currently open for a limited takeout menu Monday through Friday from 5 pm to 8 pm. Hours and availability are subject to change so check the website and Facebook page for updates.

I highly recommend giving them a try if you find yourself hungry in Columbia City.
